One In A Million?…. My Foot.

Everyone who’s living in Malaysia must have heard of the latest talent-search reality show on 8TV. With a RM1 million reward to boast, One In A Million certainly captured our attention. It started out fine, Malaysian Idol-ish, a sure-fire, tried and tested method to attract and draw audiences nationwide. No one noticed the recklessness and spontaneity the judges showed in weeding out the other 999,999-in-a-million contestants; until the previous episode was shown on Friday night. The 2 judges literally waited till the last milisecond to make their decision.

If this programme is really as prestigious as 8TV said it was (at least that was the message they were sending out), why were the judges behaving so casually in deciding the one person who would be joining the top 11? Lack of time? I’m sorry but there was plenty of time from the previous week till last Friday to decide. If their argument is that the contestant was chosen based on the performances on that night itself, there is only one thing I can say: Poor time-management. With such a big TV station like 8TV, one would expect them to cook up a better way to make the whole programme an entertaining one, not an oppressive and dispriting watch.

Honestly, if I was the person in charge, I would make sure that the result show is separated from the performance show itself. What 8TV did was take the concept of Malaysian/American Idol, stamp out the good stuff, and clogged the show with their own bad quality judgments and plannings.

If that one reason is not enough to make you see my point, let’s consider another aspect: The choice of contestants.
Who thinks that any one of them can make it big? Well, I certainly do not think so. It is easy for the judges to be clouded by their own decisions as they are part of the show right from the beginning. But as a third party, I can’t help but feel that those chosen aren’t even capable of making it big in the country itself, what more internationally? Look at each and everyone of them.

International star?

HAHAHA!

Have you even heard them sing?

I’ve heard loads of other singers who can sing better than them, yet not exactly successful. For this, I blame the two judges: Syafinaz and Paul Moss.

Syafinaz - This girl can make thought-provoking comments; she makes sense as well. But WTH is she doing giving suggestions that the contestants themselves could not comprehend? Explain to them my dear. Tell them exactly in layman’s terms what you want. Do not confuse them with your professional, expert terms. Yes we all know that you are a vocal teacher, you have a degree in music bla bla bla. But please make yourself comprehensible to the contestants at least.

Paul Moss - I used to admire his blatant honesty. Lately, all he has been doing is getting on my nerves. This guy displays an obvious liking for the cuter female contestants, showering them with praises even when they do not deserve it. For those who are not-so-good-looking, sorry my dears. Unless you are REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD (and I do mean really good), you might not hear a word of compliment from the guy throughout the whole contest. Reality is harsh isn’t it?

On the whole, this programme is not worth the watch. Unless you are prepared for some explicit injustice, heartache and not to mention mortification of the contestants and judges, STAY AWAY.

Sure, they might improve, but they need an express amelioration to impress me. And time is not on their side.

Well, I’m not so sure about this … I disagree with you, Adrina, for your statement on “as a third party, I can’t help but feel that those chosen aren’t even capable of making it big in the country itself, what more internationally??”
I think some of them are able to .. at least in the country, coz they have the package and the public’s support. Example: Suki … wow, one sweet girl who is pretty talented, looks good and has the potential to be a superstar! Yet, I don’t know why she likes Avril songs so much … x_x … LOL … Actually, Zai has the powerful vocal chords too, but unfortunately her physical appearance not so bright for her.
Overall, I think this show is kinda neutral, not as good as MI, but not too bad also.
Make further comments to my point of view, girls and guys .. Ur feedback is totally welcome … haha!
